‘Full of Charm’: One-Room Schoolhouse Shines in New Role as an Adorable Tiny Home

Making the Grade: Historic New York Schoolhouse Turned Adorable Tiny Home Finds Buyer Fast

It’s hard to imagine a cuter tiny home than this Elizaville Public Schoolhouse, which has already found a buyer just 10 days after it came on the market for $295,000. The darling domicile is currently pending a sale.

The recently renovated schoolhouse was built in 1860 to serve the farming community of Elizaville, NY—a hamlet in the towns of Clermont and Gallatin, which still had fewer than 2,000 residents as of 2022.

But the charming one-bedroom, one-bath, 706-square-foot house isn’t quite as remote as you’d think.

The quarter-acre lot is tucked among the Catskill Mountains and is just a 15-minute drive to the towns of Hudson or Rhinebeck, and two hours to downtown Manhattan.

Signs of students

Despite the fresh coat of paint and a small but modernized kitchen and bath, the home retains many of its original features, including the loft bedroom, where the school’s headmistress once slept.

“There are still marks in the floors where the desks were lined up and students’ names etched into the wavy glass windows,” says listing agent Annabel Taylor. “The floors, windows, cupola, and metal roof are all original.”

The home has central air that can be controlled remotely, as well as a tankless water heater.

“One advantage to living in the beautiful rural town of Elizaville is that all residents are granted access to Twin Lakes, which is a great swimming spot just three minutes from the schoolhouse,” Taylor says.

The house doesn’t fall under any historical covenants, so it can be updated or expanded.

But it’s hard to think about changing a thing on this little white schoolhouse with a bright pink door.

“It’s pretty perfect as is, and full of charm,” Taylor says.
