The most expensive listing in Washington, DC, is also the home where Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once lived.

Listed for $26.5 million, the 15,364-square-foot estate spans three parcels.

Nearly 30 years after her passing, the former first lady still remains an icon in American history. And she left behind a real estate legacy, as well.

“She bought the home shortly after President John F. Kennedy‘s assassination on Nov. 22, 1963,” says listing agent Jonathan Taylor, of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. “They moved into it in February and only stayed there through September. It was too busy, with tour buses coming by all the time. The media created a sideshow, so that’s when she decided to move the family to New York.”

What was once three separate homes has been combined over the years to offer one interconnected property, located at 3017-3009-3003 N St NW.

The historic Georgetown residence includes 13 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms. The grand, Federal-style home where Kennedy once lived at 3017 N St. NW is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This designation is because of the property’s affiliation with former Secretary of War Newton D. Baker, who rented the residence from 1916 through 1920.

Built in 1794, the storied estate has had many other notable owners, including Georgetown Mayor Thomas Beall and 1951 Miss America Yolande Fox, according to the listing.

Renovated residence

Throughout the years, the hilltop home has been thoughtfully renovated while preserving its historic features. In 2017, the three homes were connected by a garage and tunnel.

“The hallway, dining room, and family room are basically original, along with some windows,” Taylor notes. “The middle home was built in 1950, and the end home was built in 1880. There are five places where the three homes connect. It can be a little bit complicated for some people.”

The brick home has become a “modern showplace embracing the highest quality design, fixtures, and finishes,” according to the listing.

Meanwhile, historic highlights include a grand entry, original fireplace surrounds, and beautiful moldings. There are also built-ins, exposed beams, and wood-paneled walls.

A second-floor, primary suite with a spa bath offers a private balcony that overlooks the back gardens.

Four more en suite bedrooms are situated on the third floor, which boasts an observation deck.

The adjoining brick home at 3009 N St NW offers an additional three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.

The third residence, at 3003 N St NW, adds five more bedrooms and 3.5 baths. There is also a three-car garage.

As for the next buyer, Taylor believes it will probably be someone who wants to live in the space full time.

“It is really a family compound,” he says. “You could also run your own business out of the home, but it can’t be a commercial entity.”
