A midcentury modern home on a Los Angeles hillside just came on the market for $1,599,000. Known as the Stilt House, it previously had a star turn on the silver screen.

It appeared in the 1995 action film “Heat,” directed by Michael Mann and starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

Built in 1962, the unique dwelling is mostly supported by a sinewy system of stilts and juts over a hillside.

The home offers unsurpassed vistas, including the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood sign.

The home ‘stands alone’

The property “stands alone on the top of City Terrace in one of the most storied neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Boyle Heights,” says agent Joshua F. Smith, who is listing the property with Sally Forster Jones, both of Compass. “With a unique view southeast of downtown, it’s one of only a handful of properties of this kind that have unobstructed views of the entire city—all the way to the beach—with downtown L.A. as the centerpiece.”

Midcentury modern style

The home features 2,016 square feet of living space. The entry, living and dining areas, and the kitchen flow seamlessly together in the open floor plan.

There are three bathrooms and three bedrooms—one of them a primary suite with a newly remodeled bath, including a soaking tub, dual-sink vanity, and glass-enclosed shower.

An enclosed 200-square-foot carport serves as a studio, with a charming putting green just outside the door. The space could also be used for an in-law unit.

The current owners have been comfortable in this stilt-supported spot for almost 20 years, having purchased the place in 2003 for $289,500.

The gravity-defying marvel once served as a case study for the engineering program at California State University, Los Angeles.
