A colorful, postmodern mansion with flair to spare has hit the market in Sarasota, FL.

The multihued home is considered an architecturally significant structure.

“Architect Don Chapell built the home for himself and family, and I’ve never seen a home where there has been more thought, attention, and custom-planning for every detail,” says Lisa Rooks Morris, who is co-listing the house with Amy Drake. Both are with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty.

The list price is $10 million.

Chapell died six months before the house was finished, and he never got to see what many call his masterpiece. His widow completed it around 2000.

The current sellers bought the home in 2005 for $3.8 million, according to Realtor.com®.

“They have been incredible stewards of this house, and they haven’t changed any of the colors that [Chapell] originally chose,” Morris explains. “It’s in immaculate condition, and I don’t think they’ve made a single change.”

The home is 6,843 square feet, with high ceilings and large windows. It has six bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and plenty of living space.

Meanwhile, the outside design is far from ordinary, with its colors, stripes, and shapes.

‘Gets your attention’

“It really is like living in a piece of artwork—like sculpture,” Morris says. “It definitely gets your attention. It’s a lot, but it doesn’t hurt your eyes. … It’s very soft and kind of inviting and sort of flows.”

Entering the home for the first time comes with a little surprise.

“You open what you think is the front door, and you’re in this incredible courtyard,” Morris says. “Then you walk through the courtyard, and you enter the main living areas of the house.”

The home is made mostly from poured concrete using custom molds—which allow for the curved walls. It even has a safe room.

Morris describes the home as whimsical and refined, noting that the paint selections are part of its clever design. She says the architect made choices by “looking at what happens to the colors throughout the day, as the sun moves.”

The primary suite is upstairs, with private balconies overlooking the pool below and Pansy Bayou just beyond.

“It has incredible bathroom space and closet space, and then it goes back to a private office,” Morris explains, adding that there’s also a main bedroom on the lower level.

The other bedrooms are on the upper floor, in the opposite wing of the house from the primary bedroom. A catwalk connects the two wings.

Chapell was part of the Sarasota School of Architecture, a modern-design movement with ties to the area. He bought the land for the house in 1983 but did not start building on it until many years later.

“Whoever buys this house will really be an architecture aficionado,” Morris says. “The house sort of sings. It has a rhythm I think architecture lovers will appreciate.”
