Looking for a glam spot to host parties and events? Consider this over-the-top party pad used by William Randolph Hearst during the 1920s and 1930s. The 3,000-square-foot townhome in Los Angeles is available to rent for $25,000 a month.

The unit in the Los Altos apartment complex on Wilshire Boulevard is being represented by Ari Wintraub of Sotheby’s International Realty–Brentwood Brokerage. The terms are for a one-year lease.

“They decked out the unit for entertaining. He created what looks like a mini Hearst Castle. He appointed it at a very grand scale,” says Wintraub. The newspaper baron even had a door connecting to the adjacent unit, occupied by his mistress, actress Marion Davies.

Architect Julia Morgan, who partnered with Hearst on his castle in San Simeon, CA, reportedly designed the lavish spaces.

Almost a century old, the Spanish-style building evolved into a hotel apartment popular with movie industry folks.

Since Hearst’s time in the two-level unit, not much has been changed, a testament to the quality of materials.

Opulent interiors

“It’s still intact in its original way, with the coffered ceiling and sconces in the entry and fir-lined closets,” says Wintraub. “A lot of homes today are one big empty space.” This unit is the opposite, with nooks, crannies, and cozy corners.

Past the castlelike front door, marble and wood form a grand entry.

There are four bedrooms—three on the first level and one upstairs—and four baths. Two of the baths are adorned in green and blue vintage tiles.

Natural light pours in through west- and south-facing windows in the living room. The custom, built-in bar room where Hearst entertained Hollywood guests remains.

This particular townhouse has been featured in many Hollywood films and music videos, including a Gwen Stefani video and the 2014 movie “The Gambler,” starring Mark Wahlberg.

“Nowadays, celebrities live in houses in the Hollywood Hills,” says Wintraub. But “people that work in the business, the creative sorts, still gravitate toward the building.

“I think the tenant would be someone like Johnny Depp. He tied together a few units a few years ago in an art deco hotel,” adds Wintraub, referring to the Eastern Columbia building. Depp has since sold his condos.

“We picture a creative type who’s bicoastal and loves to entertain,” Wintraub says.

The building comes with a doorman and 24/7 security.
