Midcentury Modern Home

A gorgeous and rare midcentury modern home in Washington, DC, is now available for $2,195,000.

Most residences in the nation’s capital are row homes, stately manors, or condos, so it’s a treat to see an atomic-age gem in DC.

Built in 1961 and known as the A. F. Maxwell House, the 3,344-square-foot, four-bedroom dwelling features glass facades and spacious cantilevered terraces. It was designed by George T. Ward and modified in 1987 by Joan Fabry of Fabry Associates Architects.

“The home was expanded on rather seamlessly,” says listing agent Christopher Ritzert, of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. “It is a steel beam construction. The beams were extended to the roofline, and the decks appear to be floating.”

The updates in the late ’80s were savvy and subtle, designed to preserve the home’s unique architecture. It’s hard to see what’s original and what was changed in the listing photos.

“The home was custom-built, so there are lots of unique features,” Ritzert says. “The interior features taller ceilings that are 9-foot-5 as opposed to traditional 8-foot ceilings. There is a lot of glass as well. The sellers renovated the kitchen and bathrooms in keeping with the midcentury modern aesthetic.”

Inside, the space now flows seamlessly from room to room.

The addition “opened up the kitchen and adjacent family room,” Ritzert says. “There is also a large sliding window, which is frosted, so you can close the kitchen off from the dining room.”

The dining room features oversized windows and is “very large, as is the kitchen,” he adds. The gorgeous kitchen “has orange cabinets along with an eight-burner BlueStar commercial-grade range that features custom orange knobs.”

The living room is bright and airy with lots of natural light. It boasts built-in cabinets, floor-to-ceiling windows, and beautiful hardwood flooring.

There’s also a built-in bookcase near the floating staircase, which leads to a gorgeous primary suite with a private terrace.

The home is located in the Northwest area, about 5 miles from the White House and a few blocks from the Maryland state line.

“The home is located on a hill in the Kent neighborhood that is adjacent to the Palisades that runs along the Potomac River,” Ritzert says. “It has access to several parks for hiking and dog walking—and there are lots of restaurants and shops nearby within walking distance.”

As for a new owner, Ritzert thinks it’ll be someone who might not know that midcentury modern homes can be found in the capital.

“It is the kind of house that someone who is not actively in the market for will fall in love with once they see it,” he says. “There are some modernist properties here, but one of the things that really distinguishes this home is that it is custom-built and is a very comfortable size.”
