NM Adobe Artist's Retreat

If it’s a piece of “living” art history you’re after, how about moving into this adobe-style retreat, located just 30 minutes from downtown Santa Fe, NM?

The four-bedroom, three-bath, 3,364-square-foot home at 16 Camino Libre in Galisteo was built in 1994 by Santa Fe artist and designer Douglas Atwill.

His signature style has helped establish the aesthetic of homes throughout the region, most notably along Santa Fe’s historic Canyon Road.

Atwill, who has lived in Santa Fe since 1969, also penned a book about the 59 homes he’s renovated or built, and subsequently sold.

In some circles, the spacious Camino Libre home, listed at $1,950,000, is even known as Douglas Atwill No. 46. To others, it’s best known as the home of the late artist Nancy Holt.

Inspired space

“She was one of the only female earthworks and land artists in the 1960s and ’70s—a field heavily dominated by men,” says the current homeowner, Ethan Smith.

“She lived in the home from soon after it was built in the early 1990s until her death in 2014,” Smith adds. “And we are the only owners other than Ms. Holt and, briefly, Atwill himself.”

You don’t need an artist’s eye to appreciate the unique beauty of this 13-acre property.

With its open-concept interior, high ceilings, and oversized windows, which present unhindered natural views from every angle, it’s a sanctuary that is as timeless as the landscape itself.

Smith and his wife made recent upgrades to the home, including a 40-foot, black-bottom pool and hot tub.

“In our years at 16 Camino Libre, we rarely felt the urge to take a vacation,” says Smith. “The home has a relaxed sophistication that makes it a destination unto itself. It has the overall feel of a resort oasis, and the sweeping views of open range and mountains are at once spectacular and soothing. And the location on a quiet country road affords maximum privacy.”

In addition to its proximity to Santa Fe, the home sits firmly in the middle of Galisteo—a storied artists’ colony in its own right.

“For such a small town, Galisteo holds a uniquely broad international appeal,” says Smith. “The annual Galisteo Studio Tour draws scores of visitors to the town’s many working artists, and nearby points of interest include the ghost-town movie set on the neighboring 20,000-acre ranch, formerly owned by fashion designer and film director Tom Ford.”
