You might not want to be alone in this unique retreat once you get a gander at its entertaining potential.

Originally designed for reclusive Swedish film star Greta Garbo, this elegant residence in Beverly Hills, CA, is on the market for $12 million.

Perched on a hillside high above Sunset Boulevard, it was built in 1937 for Garbo and her partner at the time, Leopold Stokowski.

When it was built, it was a humble 2,000-square-foot, Aztec-inspired adobe residence with small windows. It was surrounded by high, paparazzi-proof walls, in order to accommodate Garbo’s profound desire for privacy.

Because of its design, it became a favorite spot for celebs to gather and sunbathe without being disturbed. It’s currently inhabited by a Russian film director, who purchased the property for $7,450,000 in 2006.

That same year, prominent designer Nicole Sassaman was hired to reimagine the home. She added a second story and more than doubled its size, to 4,675 square feet.

Sassaman adroitly ushered the dwelling into the 21st century by adding windows and walls of glass.

Those attributes offer jaw-dropping views of the area from downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean.

If Garbo could see her home today, she’d probably never leave. The actress, still considered one of Hollywood’s greatest, had a career that spanned silent and sound films. She was nominated for three Oscars and never won. She was given an honorary Academy Award “for her luminous and unforgettable screen performances” in 1954, but she didn’t show up to receive it.

Among her notable films are “Grand Hotel,” “Ninotchka,” and “Anna Karenina.” She made her last film in 1941, then spent her retirement collecting valuable art and pursuing more solitary activities. She died in 1990 at 84.

Mark Mintz at Compass has the listing.
