When it was built in 1875, this home in Fayette, MO, belonged to the local sheriff, and included a jail with nine cells out back.

Now, after a renovation, the property is on the market for $350,000. Thanks to the accommodations for ne’er-do-wells, the otherwise modest Missouri home has rocketed around the web and became a bona fide viral sensation.

The two-bedroom home is a lovely three-story historic residence with hardwood floors and updated major systems on 2,465 square feet. The living area is elegant and refined, and features high ceilings, crown molding, a new kitchen, and updated bathrooms.

You’d never guess that attached to the home is a 2,500-square-foot slammer with multiple cells and a booking room.

It’s the surprise amenity that caught everyone off guard.

The reaction around the web was much the same. Meandering through the listing photos like many others, falling for the serene, muted interiors for the first couple of dozen photos, until—whammo!

Once you get over the jailhouse shock, it’s easy to see that the possibilities for this Midwestern home are endless.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on what the new owners should do with the place.

The current owner, Mike Diamond, told TMZ he’s been renting the home out for events and short-term stays.

Diamond thinks the jail cells would make a great escape room, or perhaps even a bar or restaurant. The mayor of Fayette, Kevin Oeth, thinks the home could be converted into an epic haunted house.

The great news for the lucky buyers? Everyone in town will want to stop by and see what they’ve done with it.

Not surprisingly, the listing agent, Justin Radel, says he’s been bombarded with calls from folks interested in purchasing the jailhouse. It’s a one-of-a-kind historic treasure, listed at a steal. Not that we would ever steal anything!
