A home that once belonged to country legend Johnny Cash has landed on the market for $1,795,000.

Cash and his wife, Vivian, purchased the ranch-style residence in Ventura, CA, in 1961. The couple divorced in 1966, and Cash married June Carter in 1968, and the new couple relocated to the Nashville, TN, area.

Vivian reportedly sold this Ventura home in the early 1970s, according to the Wall Street Jouirnal. The current owners picked up the property in 2003 for $739,000.

Nestled in the hills between Ventura and Ojai, the 6-acre property was designed to be a family getaway. The location is about two hours north of Los Angeles.

The “Walk the Line” singer reportedly built the home to his specifications, and his touches survive to this day.

Inside the double-gated, five-bedroom house, most rooms remain original to Johnny and Vivian’s vision, the listing states. Details include the wall-mounted turntable and an intercom system. Naturally, the “Man in Black” had a black commode in his bathroom.

A curved brick fireplace in the family room serves as a focal point upon entering. Custom wood built-ins in the kitchen and living room are period-specific.

A wood-paneled studio where Johnny worked on his music remains intact. It features high windows allowing in natural light while providing privacy.

Outside, the grounds are dotted with live oaks, gardens, and fenced pastures. There’s also a pool and barbecue area.

“This property is the perfect example of a time capsule,” says listing agent Adam McKaig, with Douglas Elliman.

“The minute you walk through the front door, you are transported into Johnny’s living room,” he adds. “From the record player that pulls out of the wall to the intercom system, to the wagon wheel light fixtures, this house was designed by the legend himself. Decades later, his essence lives on through the four walls. It’s a timeless piece of history.”

McKaig and Melissa Borders, also with Douglas Elliman, represent the property.

Lakeside estate

Cash and Carter died months apart in 2003. Their Hendersonville, TN, spread, where they lived for most of their marriage, was sold to Bee Gees member Barry Gibb in 2006 for $2.3 million.

The former Cash home burned down in 2007.

The lakeside estate was last sold in 2020 for $3.2 million. The 4.5-acre compound includes an apartment, garage, and pool. The compound’s 14,000-square-foot mansion burned down in 2007.
