A custom-built home in the suburbs of San Antonio has more in common with a Moroccan riad than a Texas mansion.

“’Unique’ is often a bad word in real estate, but literally there’s nothing else like it,” explains listing agent Jason Glast, with Phyllis Browning Co.

Listed for $3.95 million, the 8,320-square-foot residence in Terrell Hills was built in 2014. It contains a number of intricate details from around the world.

“Marrakech, Morocco, is [the owners’] favorite city in the world, and they think it is the most romantic place. So they brought in things they brought back from Marrakech—and from their travels to India, Egypt, and throughout Western Europe.

“In the master bath, there’s a rose window over the tub. That rose window was brought in from a chapel in upstate New York. It’s really a testament to their love of travel,” Glast adds.

Although the aesthetic reflects the current owners’ tastes, the home can fit almost any buyer’s preference thanks to the neutral palette, Glast says.

“Whoever buys it, whatever style they have in furniture and art will work here,” he adds.

The five-bed, 6.5-bath home features custom details throughout—and they take some time to soak in. But the home isn’t overwhelming, the agent says.

“It’s not the type of place that a buyer can come in and do a 15-minute tour and just say, ‘Yep, I got this.’ They’re going to need to go through it multiple times,” Glast says.

The sellers are taking their furnishings with them to their new modern loft, but the items that are built-in will remain.

“The chandeliers and the fixtures are just unbelievable. I couldn’t believe that they’re going to leave everything,” Glast says.

Many of the home’s ceilings feature beams, carvings, and other detailed work.

“In that main living area, there are mosaics inlaid into the ceilings. Each one represents one of the countries they traveled to,” Glast explains. “They’re really beautiful. The way I look at it—it’s not too specific to this one owner. It’s just beautiful tile work, whether you care about those countries or not.”

The home’s Spanish mission-style exterior also bursts with character.

“The niches in the front are literally based on the Alamo, and the rest of it is very similar to the facades of the other three missions in San Antonio,” Glast explains.

The acre lot also features mazes, Zen gardens, and other glorious greenery.

“The botanical society has hosted tours there for the last several years,” Glast says.
