Minneapolis Shipping Container Home

To snap up an architecturally unique home—including one that is made out of shipping containers—typically requires a buyer to go over and above a region’s median home price. After all, there’s a premium to pay for any design that deviates from the norm.

Which is what makes this shipping container home in the Jordan neighborhood of Minneapolis so different. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home is listed for $280,000 and features two stories of container life, with a total of 1,302 square feet of living space. The current median list price in Minneapolis is $330,000, which means that this one-of-a-kind residence is also affordable.

It’s being marketed as the city’s first shipping-container home.

The listing agent, Amber Steiner of eXp Realty, says, “This is a true single-family home, right in the heart of Minneapolis.”

Those who buy in this neighborhood are typically first-time home buyers, although many never leave.

“This house, a half-hour away, would be out of the price range” for many people, she says.

The seller—who commissioned the design over a three-year period—worked with Twin Cities’ Paragon Designs on the architectural concept and is hoping to replicate this success.

One reason why shipping-container homes haven’t sprung up in this part of the country is a function of the climate: the concern that a container would need to have sufficient insulation to survive the brutal winters in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

This home’s final design addresses those seasonal concerns and incorporated feedback from city meetings.

“He proved those naysayers wrong,” says Steiner.

Custom features include a staircase as well as counters crafted from wood, as well as decks on the second floor for outdoor access.

Large picture windows in the living room and kitchen look out on the property and coax in natural light, proving the property’s sustainable design. The open-concept layout on the first floor lets in even more natural light.

Steiner has thus far entertained interest from a variety of sellers, including millennials and single parents. A ribbon-cutting event last week drew plenty of local attention as well.

One of the home’s key amenities is a detached two-car garage, which is rare in a neighborhood of older homes with much smaller garages.

That the property is up on a hill provides some privacy, as well as views of the treetops. Now it will simply take some buyers with a sense of adventure, who know a bargain when they see it.
