A celebrated winery and vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley’s Santa Rita Hills appellation with a reputation for producing award-winning wines is now available for $8.5 million.

The name—Mosby Winery & Vineyard—will no doubt be familiar to oenophiles, particularly those who adore Italian varietals featuring California-grown grapes.

Founded by Bill Mosby in 1977, the Buellton, CA, winery and vineyard in Santa Barbara County features 18 acres of the vines he planted that year. The grapes include sangiovese, dolcetto, pinot grigio, nebbiolo, and sagrantino, which continue to thrive in the property’s clay loam and shale soils.

Mosby died last summer at the age of 89, and the winery came on the market at the beginning of the year. The multimillion-dollar asking price isn’t just for those coveted soils.

The buyer will acquire all of the wine inventory, the rights to use the brand name, plus farming and winery equipment. The listing also folds in a three-bedroom, one-bathroom home currently used as a private residence. The winery produces around 5,000 cases annually, spanning 20 different wines.

History and architecture fans will also love the red barn structure currently employed as a tasting room, where visitors can sample the winery’s portfolio and purchase wine by the bottle. It’s a delicious contrast to the sleek, contemporary tasting rooms that have sprouted on California’s Central Coast.

The farmhouse is the result of a restoration led by the Mosbys of a former 1880s carriage house that once stored visitors’ horse-drawn carriages, which blew down, due to high winds, in 1977.

Rancho de la Vega was the property’s original name, when the Mosbys bought it. That heritage is honored in the existing adobe structure—dating back to 1853—thoughtfully preserved by the Mosbys.

Initially, the wines produced on the property featured the Vega label, but the Mosbys changed the moniker to Mosby in 1986.

Another unique structure on the property is a 216-square-foot, adobe-style church, built in 2014 with pews salvaged from an Ohio church. Complete with stained-glass windows, this little church will be a perfect spot for a new owner to solicit divine intervention when harvest time rolls around.

As the listing suggests, “this historic property is ready for its next chapter to be written.”

Could it be a seasoned winemaker at a local winery looking to make a mark? Or a deep-pocketed wine lover in search of a turnkey operation? Either way, we raise a glass to the eventual buyer.

Kerry Mormann with Berkshire Hathaway Home Service has the listing.
