Luxe Mansion Built Around a Tropical Tree Is a Colorful Delight

A Florida home centered around a tree blossomed into a true labor of love. The result is a colorful 7,487-square-foot dream house in Boca Raton, FL.

The home is on the market for $12,950,000, and the center of its front entry has an opening for a ylang-ylang tree—a specimen common in tropical climates throughout Asia.

The custom-designed opening means the tree can flourish right on the front porch. As an olfactory benefit, the tree produces the flowers used to make the popular perfume Chanel No. 5.

“When [the owners] saw that tree and experienced the scent of the flower, they thought that it would be an absolutely perfect match [for their ideas for the house,]” says John Poletto, the co-listing agent with Mark Nestler. “The Florida country club lifestyle allows for complete openness, and at the same time, a very dramatic feel.”

The owners ticked the boxes on a luxe open and airy residence with an innate sense of high drama. But now, the couple who spent three years to build this dream home inspired by a tropical tree have put their vision up for sale.

“This is a statement house. The moment you see it from the street, you feel the grandness of it,” Poletto says.

He says the owners are selling because it is just too large for their current needs.

The house was finished last year. It’s named “Le Sumi” and is inspired by the colors and design of the owners’ South African heritage.

They traveled around the world to find materials and objects to fit their idea for the home’s design.

The result is a contemporary house with pops of color and fascinating patterns, including an entry staircase made with sparkling metal mosaic.

They also picked out marble for their driveway and unique lighting fixtures to use throughout the house.

“They have a lighting system that allows lighting in multiple colors,” Poletto explains, adding that it comes in about a dozen different colors, and can be phased throughout the house or just in select rooms.

Enormous windows allow natural light to stream in and for folks inside to soak in the views of the Arnold Palmer-designed golf course outside.

The house sits in Boca’s exclusive St. Andrews Country Club community. A buyer must be prepared to shell out an additional $150,000 entry fee for the club and annual dues of about $50,000.

Back inside, each wall is currently adorned with colorful wallpaper. However, if that isn’t the new owner’s style, it won’t be a problem.

“They created a system in advance. It’s designed that the wallpaper rolls off very easily, and new paper can be put up,” Poletto explains.

The mansion offers four bedrooms, including a first-floor master suite.

“The design in the master is grand. It has dual bath areas and exceptional closet space, plus, it overlooks the pool and patio area as well as the golf course,” Poletto says.

A sleek indoor kitchen boasts two large islands, each with a sink. Several people can also sit around an additional bar.

And the openness of the space is a big plus.

“You have a beautiful open flow to the family area,” Poletto explains.

Along the walls, there are various kinds of appliances including a Miele range with eight burners, several ovens, warming trays, and steam ovens.

Poletto told us the ideal buyer is someone who wants a contemporary home that comes with a country club lifestyle.

“It feels like a proper blend of height and space. You feel like you’re in a very special place, because of the openness and the glass,” he adds.
